We decided to see what the little HR-V could handle off-road. Did it come back in one piece?

127 lbs-ft. Yeah, i don’t think it would have spun the front wheels in front wheel drive.
The main takeaway I get here is I could spend 31 grand on this or on a nicely equipped RAV 4 XLE that’ s bigger, way more powerful, and better on fuel. hmmm. I guess its not apples to apples features wise but the stuff you lose in the XLE is more than offset by the amount of extra car you get.

I think the only reason to take the HR-V over the similarly priced Rav4 is if that smaller size is appealing to you. If you live in a city or have a small garage, it might be worth it. But absolutely, you can get more vehicle for your money elsewhere.

Well it kinda reminds me of the smart vs fit argument.
The fit is less money, gets better mileage and is generally more car for your money. You have to WANT less space and in the case of the RAV4 vs the HRV...im not sure there is that much in it. You’d have to be pretty pressed for space if a RAV4 wont fit.

That’s a good point. But some people will still prefer the smaller car.
I think that a lot of people get sucked into thinking that more is better. Like the Honda Passport vs the Pilot. At the same price, the Pilot is the better value. But if I will literally never need a 3rd row or that extra cargo space, why get the Pilot?

I get that too. Tacoma vs Tundra for example. In many cases they are sixes for price on the lot due to the unpopularity of the Tundra and the popularity of the Tacoma, to say nothing of the huge differences in capability for the minor offsets in economy (well...maybe not for the tundra but for any other FS) but I can tell you that even the smaller Tacoma is almost too big a truck for the job. Sometimes its worth it to spend more on less.
I just don’t see the benefit here personally.

Small crossovers in general seem like a bad value proposition compared to their slightly larger brethren. I don't imagine that many people will use their HR-V for anything more adventurous than a few inches of snow.

The loaded versions of each segment will always encroach on larger cars. Typically the mid-level trims are good values.
